How to Pack a Suit in a Suitcase Without Wrinkles

核心要点

The jacket's internal canvas is the only part built to hold a shape — fold with it rather than against it and the suit arrives wearable. Method, common mistakes, and how to recover a suit that has been crushed.

The short answer

Turn the jacket half inside-out, fold one shoulder into the other so the lining faces outward, then fold it once across the middle. Fold trousers along their existing crease and lay them flat. Put the suit in last, on top of everything else, and hang it within an hour of arriving. That is the whole method, and it works because a tailored jacket already contains a stiff canvas layer through the chest and shoulders — the only part of the garment engineered to hold a shape. Folding shoulder-into-shoulder puts that canvas on the outside of the fold, where it takes the pressure instead of the cloth. Every crease you are trying to avoid comes from folding across the fabric where nothing supports it. Wool worn to a wedding after a nine-hour flight will look fine on this method. Linen will not, and no technique changes that.

How to fold a suit jacket for a suitcase

Five steps, done on a flat surface rather than in the case. The aim throughout is that no fold line crosses the outer cloth without padding behind it.

  1. Lay the jacket face down and fold it vertically down the centre, sleeve on sleeve, so the back is on the outside.
  2. Reach inside one shoulder and turn it inside-out, so you are holding a pocket of lining.
  3. Slide the other shoulder into it. The two shoulders now nest, lining facing out, canvas facing the world.
  4. Smooth the sleeves flat along the body — do not fold them separately, which puts a crease at the elbow.
  5. Fold the whole thing once across the waist. Twice only if the case is small; every extra fold is another line to steam out.

Why you should roll trousers but never roll the jacket

This is the part most guides get backwards. Trousers have one crease that matters and it runs down the leg; fold along it, lay them flat, and the crease is reinforced rather than fought. Rolling trousers is fine for casual cotton but sets a spiral memory in worsted wool that reads as rumpling rather than a clean line. The jacket is the opposite case: it must never be rolled, because rolling forces the chest canvas into a curve it was not blocked to hold, and canvas that has been bent out of shape does not simply hang back. It has to be re-pressed over a tailor's ham to recover, which is a workshop job rather than a hotel-room one. Fold the jacket, lay the trousers, and put the two in the case as separate flat layers rather than one bundle.

Do you need a garment bag, or is a suitcase fine?

A suitcase is fine, and often better. A garment bag only helps if it is carried flat or hung — folded into a hold bag it adds a layer of loose fabric that slides and creases the suit inside it. The exception is a hanging bag you can put in an aircraft wardrobe, which some long-haul cabins still have and which is genuinely the best option if you can get it. Otherwise use the suitcase and treat the suit as the top layer, packed last, over a flat bed of softer clothes. Do not pack it at the bottom under shoes and toiletries: the weight is what turns a fold into a crease. Tissue paper between the folds is real and does help, but only slightly, and a spare cotton shirt laid in the fold does the same job with something you were already bringing.

How to pack a suit in a carry-on

The constraint in a carry-on is depth rather than length, so the jacket gets one more fold than you would like and the recovery time on arrival goes up accordingly. Use the same shoulder-into-shoulder fold, then fold across the waist and once more only if the lid will not close. Pack shoes along the outer edges rather than on top, because a carry-on gets compressed by the overhead bin far more than a checked bag gets compressed in the hold. If the suit is going straight from the airport to an event, that is the situation where a garment bag in the aircraft wardrobe stops being a luxury. Where the schedule allows even a couple of hours in the room first, the suitcase and a hanger will get you there.

Packing a tuxedo, and why it is a harder job

A tuxedo packs the same way but recovers worse, for two reasons. Satin or grosgrain facings on the lapel are woven to sit flat and show a fold line far more visibly than matte wool does, so the roll of the lapel must not be folded across. Keep the fold below the chest. Second, the trousers usually carry a satin side stripe that will not tolerate a hot iron at all — heat glazes it permanently, and a glazed stripe cannot be recovered. If a tuxedo has to arrive perfect and you cannot hang it for a day beforehand, that is the case for professional pressing at the destination rather than a hotel iron.

Getting the creases out when you arrive

Do this in the first hour, not the night before you need it. Wool recovers by relaxing under its own weight in humid air, and that takes time rather than heat.

  1. Unpack the suit and hang it on a broad hanger that supports both shoulders — the wire hanger in the wardrobe is the wrong shape and will dent the shoulder line.
  2. Hang it in the bathroom, run the shower hot with the door shut, and leave it for fifteen minutes. Keep the suit out of the spray.
  3. Take it back into the room and leave it for at least two hours before judging it. Most fold lines fall out on their own in that window.
  4. For anything still visible, use a steamer held a few centimetres away and moving constantly — never resting.

The mistake that cannot be undone

Do not put a hotel iron directly on a suit. Worsted wool at ironing temperature goes shiny where the plate touches it, and that shine is crushed fibre rather than dirt or residue — it is permanent damage, and no cleaning process reverses it. If you must use an iron, use it through a damp cotton cloth, on the reverse of the cloth, at the lowest setting that produces steam, and never on lapels, pockets or anywhere with a seam underneath. The other irreversible one is packing a suit damp. In a warm climate a suit sealed in a case with any moisture in it will develop mildew within about two days, and mildew on wool leaves both a smell and a stain that outlast the trip.

When to stop and send it out

Steam fixes fold lines. It does not fix a collapsed shoulder, a lapel roll that has been crushed flat, or a crease that has been set with heat. Those need pressing on shaped equipment, which takes a workshop about twenty minutes and cannot be reproduced in a room. If you are in Bangkok, we press suits daily and a two-piece is 550–750 THB with pickup and delivery from 85 THB both ways — usually back within 24 hours of pickup, or the same evening if we collect before 2 PM. Our suit and shirt cleaning page covers what pressing alone costs versus a full clean, which is worth knowing: a suit that has only been folded needs pressing, not cleaning, and paying for the clean is money spent on nothing.
