How to Pack a Blazer in a Suitcase

核心要点

A soft, unlined blazer and a canvassed sport coat need different handling, and most people cannot tell which they have. Here is the test, and the right fold for each.

The short answer

Most blazers pack more forgivingly than suit jackets because most are unstructured — little or no chest canvas, thin or absent shoulder padding, often unlined. That softness means you can fold one in half down the back, then once across, and it will hang out overnight without ceremony. A structured sport coat with a defined shoulder needs the same shoulder-into-shoulder nesting fold you would use on a suit jacket. The difference matters because folding a structured coat carelessly crushes the canvas, and folding an unstructured one elaborately is wasted effort. Check which you have before you pack: pinch the fabric just below the collarbone, between the outer cloth and the lining. If you feel a third layer with some stiffness to it, it is canvassed. If it feels like two thin layers, it is soft and you can relax.

How to tell a soft blazer from a structured one

The pinch test above is the quick version. Two other signals: pick the blazer up by the collar and let it hang — a structured coat holds a shoulder line in the air, a soft one collapses. And look inside at the shoulder seam; visible padding means structure. Linen and cotton blazers are almost always soft, as are most travel and knitted blazers. Wool sport coats from a tailor are usually canvassed, and anything with a strongly defined shoulder almost certainly is. If you cannot tell, treat it as structured. The nesting fold costs you thirty seconds and does no harm to a soft jacket.

The fold for a soft blazer

This is genuinely simpler than the suit-jacket method, and using the full nesting fold on an unlined linen blazer just adds folds you then have to release.

  1. Empty the pockets and do up one button.
  2. Fold the blazer in half down the centre of the back, sleeve onto sleeve.
  3. Smooth the sleeves flat along the body.
  4. Fold once across the waist and pack it as the top layer of the case.

Does a blazer wrinkle less than a suit jacket?

It wrinkles more, and it matters less. Unlined and half-lined blazers crease readily because there is no lining to slide against the outer cloth, and linen creases at a look. But a soft blazer is expected to look relaxed, so a few soft lines read as normal rather than as damage, and they fall out on a hanger quickly because there is no canvas holding them. A structured suit jacket creases less easily but far more visibly, and its creases are harder to remove. That trade is worth knowing when you decide what to bring: for a trip where the jacket has to look sharp on arrival with no recovery time, a soft blazer is often the more reliable choice.

Linen blazers in a hot climate

Linen is the exception to everything above. It creases in the case, creases again while you wear it, and no packing method prevents either. In Bangkok's humidity it also holds sweat at the collar and under the arms, where linen's open weave shows a mark faster than wool does. If you are bringing linen, bring two, plan on wearing each once between cleans, and accept the creasing as the character of the cloth rather than a problem to solve. Our dry cleaning pricing lists linen separately from wool for exactly this reason — it is a different job, pressed at a different temperature.
