Gowns, hoods and sashes cleaned, pressed and returned on a hanger — in time for the photographs, and in condition to hand back to the rental shop.
Why a graduation gown is not an ordinary garment
A Thai degree-conferment gown spends most of its life folded in a bag and about six hours being worn — outdoors, in Bangkok heat, under a heavy over-layer, usually with a rehearsal day before the ceremony itself. What comes off at the end is a garment with perspiration through the collar and underarms, foundation and powder along the neckline, and creases set hard into satin or polyester that will not hang out on their own.
Most gowns are also rented. That changes the job: the shop inspects it on return, and a mark you shrugged at can turn into a cleaning charge or a deduction from your deposit. The clean has to be finished before the return deadline, not merely started.
We clean gowns in-house, by hand where the trim requires it, and press them so the shoulders and sleeves hold their shape. They come back on a hanger, covered, ready to wear or ready to return.

Inspection and spot test
We check the trim, velvet facings, embroidered crest and any metallic braid, and test our solvent on a hidden seam first. Academic trim is frequently a different fibre from the body of the gown and will not survive the same treatment.

Targeted pre-treatment
Perspiration at the collar and underarm, and makeup along the neckline, are treated individually before cleaning. These are the two marks that account for almost every gown we see.

Clean by the right method
Solvent dry cleaning for structured and lined gowns, gentle wet cleaning where the fabric genuinely prefers water. Hoods, sashes and tassels are handled separately from the gown body.

Press, hang, cover
Pressed so the yoke and sleeve heads sit properly, then hung and bagged. Folding a freshly pressed gown puts the creases straight back in, so we do not.

Gowns with heavy metallic braid, hand embroidery or a detachable fur trim are quoted individually from photos. Same-day service adds a 100% surcharge.
What we check before anything is cleaned
Gowns arrive from dozens of different universities and rental shops, and the construction varies far more than the outward look suggests.
- Colourfastness of the trim against the body fabric — bleeding velvet is the most common way a gown is ruined.
- Whether the crest or university badge is stitched, bonded or printed; bonded badges lift in solvent.
- Metallic braid and gold thread, which tarnish under the wrong chemistry.
- Whether the hood lining is a separate fibre from the shell, which is usual and needs separate handling.
- Any existing damage — dropped hems, missing hooks, split seams — photographed and reported to you before we start, not after.
What we will tell you honestly
Set-in perspiration that has already bleached the collar of a coloured gown cannot be reversed, and neither can heat-glazed shine on satin from a domestic iron. If your gown arrives with either, we will say so and quote for what we can genuinely improve rather than take the money and hand back the same problem. If a rental shop has told you the gown must not be cleaned at all, follow their instruction and not ours — the deposit is theirs to withhold.
Timing, and why it matters in ceremony season
Standard turnaround is next-day; same-day is available if we collect before 2 PM. Bangkok gown demand is heavily seasonal — it climbs from October and stays high through March, around the conferment ceremonies — and rental returns cluster in the same few days. In that window, book the clean the day the ceremony ends rather than the day before the gown is due back.

Graduation gown questions
Can a graduation gown be washed at home?
Usually not safely. Most gowns are polyester or a polyester-satin blend with velvet or braid trim, and the two react differently to water and heat. The common outcomes of a home wash are trim that bleeds into the body fabric, a permanently glazed shine where a domestic iron was too hot, and a crest that has lifted at the edges. Where a gown genuinely is machine-washable the label will say so — send us a photo of it and we will tell you if you can save the money.
Why do some rental shops say the gown must not be washed?
Because they have been handed too many gowns damaged by home washing, and because a badly cleaned gown cannot be re-rented. The instruction is about domestic washing rather than professional cleaning, but it is their garment and their rule. If your rental agreement forbids cleaning outright, return it as-is and let them handle it.
How much does it cost to dry clean a graduation gown?
A gown on its own is 300–500 THB and a hood or sash is 180 THB — the same rates we charge for a long dress and a shawl, because it is the same clean and the same press. Pickup and delivery is a flat 100 THB per trip. Gowns with metallic braid or hand embroidery are quoted from photos, because the handling time is genuinely different.
How long does it take?
Next-day as standard. Same-day is available when we collect before 2 PM, with a 100% express surcharge. During the October-to-March ceremony season we recommend booking as soon as the ceremony is over, because return deadlines bunch together and express slots fill.
Can you get sweat marks out of a pale gown?
Fresh perspiration, yes, in the large majority of cases — it is the single most common thing we treat on a gown. Old perspiration that has already lightened the dye is a different matter: the mark is missing colour rather than added dirt, and cleaning cannot put colour back. We will tell you which one you have before you commit.
Do you clean the cap and tassel too?
Yes. Caps are cleaned and reshaped, and tassels are handled separately because the threads tangle and flatten if they go through with the gown. If the tassel is a keepsake and you would rather it were not cleaned at all, say so and we will leave it out.
