How to Pack a Suit for a Flight

Overhead bins compress harder than the hold does. Which option to choose, how to pack for it, and the recovery plan when there is no time to hang anything.

The short answer

If the aircraft has a wardrobe and the crew will take your suit, that is the best option by a distance and it costs nothing to ask at boarding. Failing that, a checked suitcase is usually kinder to a suit than a carry-on, which surprises people. A carry-on gets wedged into an overhead bin and compressed by whatever is loaded after it, while a checked bag sits in a hold under a more even load. Pack the suit flat on top in either case, folded shoulder-into-shoulder, and hang it as soon as you reach the room. The one situation that changes the calculation is a tight connection or an event straight from the airport — then keep the suit with you regardless, because a suit in a delayed hold bag is worse than a slightly creased one on your shoulder.

Packing a suit in a carry-on

Depth is the constraint, so expect one more fold than ideal and plan recovery time on the other end.

  1. Use the shoulder-into-shoulder fold, then fold across the waist.
  2. Build a flat base of soft clothes first — shirts, knitwear — so the suit is not resting on hard edges.
  3. Lay the suit on top as the last thing in, jacket and trousers as separate flat layers.
  4. Put shoes and toiletries along the outer edges of the case, never on top of the suit.
  5. If the bin is full at boarding, gate-check the bag rather than forcing the lid — a forced lid is what sets creases.

Is the aircraft wardrobe worth asking for?

Yes, and it is under-used because most passengers assume it is a business-class perk. On many long-haul aircraft the wardrobe is simply the closet nearest the galley, and cabin crew will often hang a single suit carrier for a passenger who asks politely at boarding rather than mid-flight. It will not always be available and it is entirely at the crew's discretion, so it cannot be the plan you rely on — pack as though the answer will be no, and treat a yes as a bonus. If you do get it, take the suit off the hanger and put it on a broad one as soon as you reach the room; aircraft hangers are thin and will dent the shoulder over a long flight.

What about the hold — will a checked suit get crushed?

Less than people expect. Hold baggage is loaded in containers and the load is spread rather than concentrated, so a suit packed flat on top of a case generally arrives in reasonable shape. The real risks with checking are different ones: delay and damp. A bag that misses your connection takes the suit with it, and a case that has sat on wet tarmac can arrive with moisture inside, which in a warm climate starts mildew within a couple of days. If you check a suit, do not leave it sealed in the case on arrival — get it out and onto a hanger even if you are not wearing it for days.

You land two hours before the event

Hang the suit immediately, run the shower as hot as it goes with the bathroom door closed, and leave the jacket in the steam — not the spray — for fifteen minutes. Then hang it in the room with a window open if there is one. That will release most fold lines in the time you have. Wear the shirt you packed flat rather than the one folded around anything. Do not iron the jacket under time pressure, which is when the permanent shine happens. If the suit came out of the case genuinely crushed and the event actually matters, a professional press is a twenty-minute job and worth the taxi. In Bangkok we run same-day pressing when a suit is collected before 2 PM — details on suit and shirt cleaning.
