The short answer
Assume you will be soaked to the skin within ten minutes of leaving the hotel, and that the water will be cold, thrown from buckets, and often mixed with white clay powder. Wear quick-drying synthetics rather than cotton, dark colours or a pattern rather than white, closed shoes with grip rather than flip-flops, and nothing you care about. Carry your phone in a sealed pouch and leave your passport in the safe with a photocopy in your pocket instead. The clay powder is the part people underestimate: it is chalky, it gets into every seam, and rinsed carelessly it sets into a grey haze that survives a wash. The festival runs 13–15 April nationally, with Bangkok's Silom and Khao San areas at their most intense in the afternoons. There is no neutral ground once you are on a participating street — being dry is not a signal to be spared. Either dress for it or stay off those roads.
What to wear
The single worst choice is a white cotton t-shirt, which is what a lot of visitors default to. Wet white cotton is transparent, holds the clay powder visibly, and takes most of a humid day to dry.
- Quick-drying synthetic or a synthetic blend — a sports top dries in an hour, cotton takes most of a day.
- Dark or patterned rather than white, so clay marks and transparency are not a problem.
- Closed shoes with a grip sole. Pavements become genuinely dangerous and lost flip-flops are the most common minor casualty.
- A second complete outfit waiting at the hotel, because you will not want to put the first one back on.
- Sunglasses — not for sun, but because iced water thrown into the face at close range stings.
How do you protect a phone during Songkran?
A sealed waterproof pouch on a lanyard, bought before you go out rather than from a street vendor at the event, and tested in a sink first. Water resistance ratings on modern phones are for splashes and rain, not for a bucket of iced water thrown at close range from two metres, and the pressure of a direct hit is what forces water past a seal. Keep the phone in the pouch and photograph through the plastic rather than taking it out. The other thing worth protecting is a hotel key card, which demagnetises when soaked and will leave you queuing at reception in wet clothes.
The clay powder, and why it matters afterwards
The white paste smeared on faces and shoulders is a chalk-based powder mixed with water, and it is harmless to skin but not to clothing. It is alkaline and mildly abrasive, and it works into the weave. If it dries into fabric and is then washed in hot water, it can set as a permanent grey cast, particularly on dark colours where it shows most. The fix is to rinse it out cold, thoroughly, before anything else touches the garment, and never to let a powder-covered item sit balled up in a bag overnight in this heat.
What to do with everything at the end of the day
Do not put wet festival clothes into a suitcase or a plastic bag and deal with them later. Bangkok in April is around 35 degrees with high humidity, and a sealed bag of wet clothes will smell within a day and can raise mildew within two — and mildew on cotton leaves a stain as well as a smell.
- Rinse everything in cold water the same evening, powder first, before it dries in.
- Wring gently and hang, ideally with a fan or air conditioning moving air across it — a still humid bathroom will not dry anything.
- Deal with shoes separately: remove the insoles, stuff with paper, and dry away from direct heat, which cracks the glue.
- Anything leather that got soaked needs to dry slowly and then be re-conditioned; leather dried fast goes stiff and stays stiff.
If it is beyond a sink rinse
Every year we take in Songkran clothes that have been left in a bag for two days, and the honest position is that some of them come back and some do not. Fresh clay powder rinses out. Powder that has dried in, been ironed, or sat wet in a sealed bag is a different job and sometimes an unsuccessful one.
