How often should hotel bed linen and towels be changed?

Jewel·Updated Aug 30, 2026·5 questions

Every property changes linen between guests. What varies, and what drives laundry volume, is the stayover policy: whether a guest staying five nights gets fresh sheets once, twice or five times. The industry has moved toward opt-out programmes over the last decade, and they genuinely reduce volume — but only when the guest is given a mechanism that works, rather than a card that housekeeping ignores.

What is the standard change frequency?

Bed linen is changed between every guest, without exception. On stayovers, the common standards are every third day for mid-range properties and daily for luxury, with towels changed daily or on request. Hostels typically change between guests only. What matters more than the published policy is whether housekeeping follows it consistently, because an inconsistent policy generates unpredictable laundry volume and makes par levels impossible to set.

Do towel reuse programmes actually reduce volume?

Yes, materially, when the mechanism is clear. The version that works is an explicit action — a towel on the floor means replace, a towel on the rail means reuse — communicated in the guest's language and, critically, followed by housekeeping. The version that does not work is a card asking guests to think of the environment while housekeeping replaces everything anyway, which is common and produces no saving at all while making the property look insincere.

Does Bangkok's climate change the answer?

It does, and this is the part imported standards miss. In high humidity a towel left on a rail in an unventilated bathroom may not dry between uses, and a damp towel develops an odour within a day regardless of how clean it was. Reuse programmes work better in properties with good bathroom ventilation or air conditioning that runs while the room is empty. Where they do not, a nominal three-day towel policy produces guest complaints, and the property ends up changing daily anyway while still carrying the reputational cost of appearing to ration.

How does the policy affect our laundry cost?

Directly and predictably, which makes it the easiest lever you have. Bed linen on a three-day stayover cycle rather than daily roughly cuts sheet volume for multi-night stays by two thirds. Towels are the larger weight in most properties and the bigger saving. Since we price per kilogram, a policy change shows up in the next invoice rather than in a renegotiation — which is worth knowing before you assume the rate is the only variable.

Should the policy differ by room type?

Usually yes. Suites and long-stay rooms benefit from a different rhythm than standard rooms turned over every night, and properties that apply one blanket policy tend to over-service the short stays and under-service the long ones. Set it by length of stay rather than by rate class, tell housekeeping in one line, and put it somewhere the guest can actually see it.
