How does Bangkok humidity affect laundry drying and storage?

Air at 80% relative humidity can absorb very little additional moisture from wet fabric. In a still indoor Bangkok room (no AC, no fan, no balcony), a wet t-shirt can take 24–48 hours to dry — and during that time, bacteria grow on the damp fabric and produce a stale-laundry smell that doesn't wash out without re-soaking. With AC running and fan circulation, drying time drops to 8–12 hours. With direct air-conditioned room and a dehumidifier (rare in Bangkok flats), 4–6 hours. Outdoor balcony in sun is fastest (2–4 hours) but only between 10am–3pm and not during monsoon afternoons. Tumble drying is the only consistently fast option.

Musty smell after washing is bacterial growth on still-damp fabric. Common causes: (1) wash cycle finished but fabric stayed in machine for 6+ hours before being dried, (2) hung to dry in a humid room with no air circulation, (3) folded and stored before fully dry, (4) machine itself is dirty (washing machines in Bangkok benefit from monthly bleach + hot-water cleaning cycles). Bangkok-specific issues: pollution dust settles on white clothes if dried near busy roads (Sukhumvit, Asoke), bird droppings are common on rooftop drying lines, and many Bangkok condos forbid balcony hang-drying for aesthetic reasons (check your building rules).

Many Bangkok condos (particularly Sukhumvit and Sathorn high-rises) forbid: (1) hanging laundry on balconies visible from outside, (2) drying laundry on common-area railings, (3) operating washing machines after 10pm (noise complaints). Bangkok water is moderately hard (140–180 mg/L CaCO₃) — harder than Northern Europe, softer than the US Midwest. Effect on laundry: detergent foams less, soap scum can settle in fabrics, white cotton can yellow over many washes. Solution at our centre: water softener inline before our machines, neutral-pH detergent. At home: standard supermarket detergent works fine, occasional vinegar rinse helps with soap scum, and white shirts benefit from a quarterly oxygen-bleach soak.
