Hotel laundry vs Jewel pickup — what's the difference?

Jewel·Updated May 13, 2026·7 questions

Bangkok hotel laundry is convenient but expensive. Independent services are cheaper but require a tiny bit of coordination. Here's how the two compare across cost, quality, turnaround, and risk.

What does hotel concierge laundry actually cost?

Bangkok hotel concierge laundry rates: budget hotels (3-star Sukhumvit) 150-300 THB per piece with item-by-item pricing; mid-range hotels 300-600 THB per piece; luxury 5-star hotels (Mandarin Oriental, Anantara) 500-1500 THB per piece. A typical 5-day laundry of 8-10 items can hit 3000-12000 THB ($85-340). Compare to Jewel pickup of the same load at 3-5 kg × 200 THB + 100 THB pickup = 700-1100 THB ($20-30). The hotel charges 4-12× the equivalent independent rate.

Why is hotel laundry so expensive?

Three reasons. (1) The hotel doesn't actually wash anything in-house — they send to a third-party laundry service (often someone like us) at 100-150 THB/kg, then mark up to retail rates. (2) Hotels charge per-item rather than per-kg, which yields more revenue on small items (socks, underwear). (3) Hotels add overhead: room collection labour, lost-item insurance, billing infrastructure to put it on your room bill. The 4-12× markup is genuine business margin, not pure greed — hotels run laundry as a profit centre, not a service.

Is hotel laundry better quality than Jewel?

Not significantly. Both use commercial machines, both hand-fold, both can iron. The actual machinery and chemicals are similar — often the hotel partner laundry is at the same scale as ours. The difference: hotels have stricter accountability (they own the customer relationship and your room), but Jewel has stricter accountability too (we run on online reviews and direct customer relationships). Both deliver clean, folded, properly packaged laundry. Hotel laundry has a slight edge on uniform consistency (one supplier per hotel) but the absolute quality is similar.

When does hotel laundry actually make sense?

Three legitimate use cases: (1) You fly in 12 hours and don't have 24 hours for an external service to turn around. (2) You're at a luxury hotel with laundry included in a package — no marginal cost. (3) You're on a corporate expense account and the convenience matters more than the price. For everyone else (most tourists), the 75-90% savings of independent service is worth the 5 minutes of coordination.

Is the turnaround faster at hotel laundry?

Usually similar. Hotel concierge: pickup in the morning, return next afternoon (24-30 hours). Jewel pickup: pickup in the morning, return next afternoon (24-30 hours). Both have express same-day options at premium rates. The actual processing is the same time because hotel laundry uses the same external partners we use. The only meaningful turnaround edge of hotel laundry: zero coordination time on your part — they take the bag and you don't think about it.

What about the convenience factor?

Hotel laundry's true advantage is zero coordination. You leave a bag at the door, items return to your room. No WhatsApp, no booking, no coordination. The downside: ZERO transparency on weight, pricing details, item count, processing details. You see the bag come back, you see the bill on checkout, you don't see the math. Jewel coordination takes 5 minutes (one WhatsApp, one weight confirmation, one delivery message) but gives you full transparency. Most tourists value the transparency. Some don't.

Can I use both?

Yes — many tourists do. Use Jewel for the 'main' laundry (3-5 kg of mixed everyday items, hand-folded, packaged) and use hotel laundry for one or two specific items needing pressing for a meeting tomorrow. Or use Jewel for the whole stay and hotel laundry only for the 'I need clean clothes in 6 hours' emergency. The two services aren't mutually exclusive — many travelers run both depending on time pressure. The math: hotel laundry for 1-2 items occasionally is fine, hotel laundry for all of your trip's laundry is a $200-500 overpayment.
