How to Wash Clothes in a Hotel Room

Das Wichtigste

We run a laundry, so this is advice against our own interest where it should be: most of a traveller's washing can be done in a sink in ten minutes, if you avoid four specific mistakes.

The short answer

Fill the sink with lukewarm water, add a small amount of proper detergent rather than shampoo, agitate the garment for about a minute, leave it to soak for ten, then rinse until the water runs clear. Squeeze — never wring — then roll the garment inside a dry bath towel and press down hard with both hands. That towel press removes more water than an hour of dripping and roughly halves the drying time, which in a humid climate is the difference between clothes that dry and clothes that start to smell. Hang it in moving air, ideally in front of the air conditioning. This works well for underwear, socks, t-shirts and thin shirts. It does not work for jeans, towels, anything wool or structured, and it is not worth attempting for a week's accumulated washing.

What to use if you have no detergent

Not shampoo, which is the usual suggestion and a poor one: shampoo is formulated to be gentle on hair and leaves a conditioning residue in fabric that attracts dirt and can leave a garment feeling greasy. Hotel hand soap is better than shampoo but still leaves residue. The best improvised option is a small amount of shower gel, well rinsed. Genuinely the best answer is to buy a sachet of laundry detergent from any 7-Eleven for a few baht — they are sold in single-wash sachets everywhere in Bangkok specifically because this is such a common need, and it costs less than the shampoo you were about to waste.

The method

The whole thing takes about fifteen minutes of attention, most of which is soaking time you can spend elsewhere.

  1. Rinse the sink first — housekeeping cleans it with products you do not want in your clothes.
  2. Fill with lukewarm water. Hot water sets protein stains like sweat and blood rather than removing them.
  3. Add detergent sparingly. Too much is the single most common error and the residue is what makes hand-washed clothes feel stiff.
  4. Agitate for a minute, then leave to soak for ten. The soak does most of the work; the scrubbing does surprisingly little.
  5. Rinse repeatedly until the water is completely clear, which usually takes more rinses than you expect.
  6. Squeeze gently, never twist — wringing is what distorts collars and stretches knitwear out of shape.
  7. Roll in a dry towel, press hard, then hang in moving air.

Is it against hotel rules?

Washing a few items in the sink is universally tolerated and no hotel in Bangkok will object. What some object to is the visible drying: clothes hung over a balcony rail are against house rules in many condos and serviced apartments, largely for appearance, and a line strung across a room can set off a sprinkler head if it is run too close to one. Dry inside the room, out of sight from outside, and away from the ceiling. The other thing worth avoiding is the bathtub, not because of rules but because a full tub of soaking clothes is heavy, slow to rinse and tends to end with a garment left overnight in cold water, which is where the smell starts.

Four things not to attempt in a sink

Jeans hold too much water to hand-rinse properly and will not dry in a hotel room in this climate — a pair hung wet in a Bangkok room can still be damp two days later. Towels are the same problem, worse. Anything wool, structured or tailored should not go near water at all; a suit jacket, a knitted jumper or a bra with underwiring will lose its shape and not recover. And bedding is simply beyond the volume a sink can rinse. If it is one of those four, or if it is more than about three garments, hand-washing has stopped being the cheap option and started being the slow one.

When it is genuinely worth sending out

The honest line is volume. Three items in a sink is ten minutes and costs nothing. A week's clothes is an evening, a damp room, and a real chance of something not drying properly. Our wash and fold service is 100 THB per kilogram with a 300 THB minimum — a typical five-kilogram bag is around 500 THB, plus a flat 100 THB to collect from your hotel and bring it back, washed separately from everyone else's and returned within 24 hours. For a lot of travellers that maths only works out in our favour once there is a pile, which is why this article tells you how to do the small stuff yourself.
