Can you wash a graduation gown, and why do rental shops say no?

Rarely without damage. Most gowns are polyester or a polyester-satin blend trimmed with velvet or metallic braid, and those components behave differently in water and heat. The three failures we see are trim colour bleeding into the body of the gown, a permanent glazed shine where a domestic iron was too hot, and a university crest lifting at the edges because it was bonded rather than stitched. If the label genuinely says machine washable, it will say so plainly.

Because they have absorbed the cost of too many gowns ruined by home washing, and a damaged gown cannot be rented again. The instruction is aimed at domestic washing rather than professional cleaning, but the gown is theirs and so is the rule. If the rental agreement forbids cleaning outright, hand it back as it is and let them deal with it — the deposit is theirs to withhold.

Fresh perspiration responds well to targeted pre-treatment, and it is the single most common mark on a gown. What does not come out is old perspiration that has already lightened the dye — that mark is missing colour rather than added soil, and no cleaning process puts colour back. The worst thing you can do in the meantime is iron over it, because heat fixes it into the fibre.

We price a gown at our long-dress rate of 350–600 THB, because it is the same clean and the same press, and a hood or sash at the shawl rate of 180 THB. A cap is 120 THB, our per-item floor. Pickup and delivery is one fee for both ways, from 85 THB by road distance. Gowns with heavy gold braid or hand embroidery are quoted from photos, because the handling time genuinely differs.

Book the day the ceremony ends, not the day before the gown is due back. Thai conferment ceremonies cluster between October and March, rental return deadlines bunch into the same few days, and express slots fill first. Standard turnaround is next-day; same-day is possible if we collect before 2 PM.
