Just back from Phuket / Krabi — can you wash sandy beach clothes?

Jewel·Updated May 13, 2026·7 questions

Tourists returning to Bangkok from Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, or other beach destinations bring a specific set of laundry problems. Here's how each gets handled.

Can you wash sandy swimwear?

Yes, but rinse the sand out yourself first. A heavily-sanded swimsuit (just stuffed in a beach bag, not rinsed) damages our washing machine seals over many cycles. We can handle some sand but a full sandy bag from Phuket creates problems for downstream loads. The solution: rinse swimwear in your hotel shower for 30 seconds before bagging. This removes 90% of the sand. Then we wash normally. If you forgot to rinse: tell us at booking, we'll do an extra rinse cycle (no charge) but warn that residual sand might transfer to other clothes in your bag.

What about sunscreen stains?

Reef-safe mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) leave white or orange marks on swimwear, especially in the underarm and front zones. Standard wash doesn't always remove these. Our protocol: dish-soap pre-treat directly on the stain, leave 10 minutes, then warm wash. Success rate: 70-80% on recent stains, 40-50% on stains older than 1 month. The chemistry: sunscreen oils need detergent + heat to fully dissolve. Cold wash alone leaves residue. Tell us 'sunscreen stains' at booking and we apply the right treatment.

Will salt water damage my clothes if I don't wash for a few days?

Salt water alone doesn't damage cotton or polyester much, but the salt + sweat + sand + sunscreen combination over multiple days does. Specifically: (1) Salt left on technical fabrics (rash guards, surf shirts) breaks down lycra/spandex elasticity. (2) Salt + sweat creates yellow stains on white cotton — similar to regular sweat staining but accelerated by the salt. (3) Salt on shoes (especially leather sandals) crystallizes and stays unless you wash. The rule: if you spent 3+ days at the beach without washing, send everything to a laundry within 48 hours of returning to Bangkok.

What about my hiking shoes after Khao Yai or beach climbing?

Salt + dirt + Bangkok humidity is hard on hiking shoes. Our shoe cleaning service ($10-15/pair, 48-hour turnaround) handles this well — we hand-clean with material-appropriate brushes, condition leather, dry on a controlled rack. For technical hiking shoes (Salomon, Merrell, Asolo), we use specific chemistry. For canvas hiking shoes (Vans, Toms-style beach shoes), standard wash. Don't put leather hiking shoes in a washing machine — destroys them. See /shoe-cleaning-bangkok for full pricing.

Will my expensive Lululemon yoga clothes survive after the beach?

Yes, with the right treatment. The risk: salt + chlorine breaks down lycra over time. Our protocol: cold wash, no fabric softener, gentle dry. This is exactly what Lululemon's care guide says. Expect normal wear (no faster degradation than your home wash). For pieces that have been to multiple beach trips with chlorine pool exposure, the lycra eventually loses elasticity — that's unavoidable. Bangkok beach exposure of 1-2 days won't ruin them.

What about my white linen pants from a Phuket dinner?

Linen handles laundry well as long as it's washed correctly: cold wash, no high heat, no spin. Hot drying shrinks linen 5-10% irreversibly. We wash linen separately from cotton, line-dry or low-heat tumble dry, and hand-fold or steam-press if requested. Result: linen stays the same size and weight as before. Tell us 'linen pants' at booking. The cost is standard wash rate. For pure linen that needs ironing (linen does wrinkle naturally), add 50 THB ironing surcharge.

How fast can you turn around beach laundry?

Standard 24-hour turnaround works for most beach return loads. Same-day return (booked before 11am): possible for loads under 5 kg, premium pricing. For travelers landing in Bangkok at 6pm and flying out the next day (24-hour Bangkok stop), the realistic flow: airport → hotel by 8pm, drop laundry at hotel reception, rider picks up by 10am, deliver by 8pm next day. This works for most overnight transit stops. For tight 12-hour transits, hotel concierge laundry might be the only option (4-6 hours possible at premium price).
