The short answer
Drying is evaporation, and evaporation depends on how much more water the surrounding air can absorb. Bangkok's air in the wet season is already carrying most of what it can hold, so a wet garment hung in a still, humid bathroom has almost nowhere to send its moisture and can stay damp for well over a day. Heat does not fix this; airflow does. A shirt in front of an air-conditioning outlet or a fan will dry in a few hours, while the same shirt on a bathroom rail may still be damp the next morning and will have begun to smell by then. The smell is bacterial growth in the wet fibre, it starts within about twelve hours at this temperature, and once it is established a normal wash does not always remove it.
Why humidity beats heat
It is counterintuitive that a hot country is bad at drying clothes, and the reason is that relative humidity, not temperature, sets the rate. Air at 35 degrees can hold a lot of water, but Bangkok's already does — typically 70 to 90 per cent of capacity through the wet season. The gap between what the air holds and what it could hold is the engine of evaporation, and here that gap is small. Air conditioning helps for a reason people misunderstand: it is not the cold, it is that cooling air condenses water out of it, so the air leaving the unit is genuinely drier. That is why a garment hung near the outlet dries several times faster than one two metres away in the same room.
What actually works in a hotel room
Ranked by how much difference each makes, rather than by how often they are recommended.
- Hang the item directly in the airflow from the air-conditioning unit — by a wide margin the most effective thing available to you.
- Roll the garment in a dry bath towel and press hard before hanging. This removes more water in ten seconds than an hour of hanging does.
- Spread it out rather than folding over a rail — a garment folded double dries at less than half the rate, and the fold stays wet longest.
- Use a hanger rather than a rail, so air reaches both faces of the cloth.
- Only then consider the bathroom, and only with the extractor fan running and the door open.
How long should it take?
With airflow and a proper towel-press, a cotton t-shirt takes three to five hours and underwear or synthetics one to two. Jeans and towels will not dry overnight under any hotel-room method and should not be attempted — a wet towel rolled into a bag on checkout day is how mildew travels home with you. If something is still noticeably damp after a full night in the airflow, it is not going to dry in that room and continuing to wait is how it starts to smell.
The smell that arrives before the dryness
That distinctive sour note in a shirt that has dried slowly is bacterial, produced by organisms feeding on skin oils and sweat left in the fibre while it was wet. It is not a cleanliness failure in the wash so much as a speed failure in the drying, and it is why a garment can be washed and still smell within a day of wearing it again. Rewashing usually helps only partly, because the residue sits inside the fibre rather than on it. Getting the garment properly dry, quickly, the first time is the whole prevention. Once it has set in, a proper wash at temperature with the right detergent will usually clear it, and that is a reasonable moment to stop doing it yourself.
When to stop and send it out
Sink washing works well for underwear, socks and a shirt or two. It does not work for jeans, towels, bedding, anything heavy, or a volume of clothes that has built up over a week — and in this climate the failure mode is not that it stays dirty but that it stays damp and starts to smell.
