The folding technique that beats wrinkles
Roll-fold technique for a suit jacket: turn the jacket inside-out partly, fold one shoulder INTO the other so the lining faces out, then fold in half horizontally. The internal padding does the protective work, and there's no sharp crease anywhere on the outer fabric. Trousers: fold lengthwise along the original crease, then in half. Don't roll trousers — rolling sets a temporary crease pattern that takes hours to relax. Place the folded jacket on top of the trousers in your suitcase, with shirts wrapped in tissue paper between. The key insight: a sharp crease across an unfolded surface is what causes visible wrinkles; folding along intended seam lines (lapel, side seams, jacket vents) doesn't show.
What kind of garment bag matters
For carry-on travel, a structured garment bag is overkill — fold-into-suitcase is better. For checked travel, use a soft garment bag (like Briggs & Riley or Travelpro models) that folds in half, OR a hard suit case (Tumi has a model for two suits). Avoid thin plastic dry-cleaner bags as your travel bag — they don't protect against impact, and the plastic can stain dye-sensitive fabrics under pressure. For one suit + 5 shirts traveling for 5-7 days in Bangkok, a folded carry-on with intentional fold-line packing works fine.
In-flight care
On the plane: keep the suit in the overhead bin in your folded carry-on, NOT crammed under the seat. Crumpled in a tight space for 8+ hours sets wrinkles deeply. If your bag is too thick, remove the suit and ask cabin crew to hang it (most international flights accept this). After arrival: hang the suit in the hotel bathroom, run a hot shower for 5 minutes — steam relaxes most travel wrinkles within 30 minutes. For deeper wrinkles, room steamer (most luxury hotels in Bangkok provide) works in 10-15 minutes.
Bangkok humidity recovery
Bangkok's 73% average humidity actually helps suit fabric relax — drier travel-set wrinkles disappear faster here than they would in dry climates. Hang the suit in the bathroom overnight (steam from any shower use will cycle through the fibres). Don't use a hairdryer — overheats specific spots. Don't use direct sun — UV degrades dye over time. By morning, most travel wrinkles are gone. For stubborn lapel and shoulder wrinkles, hand-press with a damp pressing cloth (microfibre cloth, lightly damp) — pat, don't iron.
When to send for professional pressing
Send for professional press at our service if: (1) Wrinkles persist after 12 hours of bathroom hanging. (2) Suit is for an important meeting where 'mostly fine' isn't fine. (3) Multi-day travel left set-in creases beyond what humidity can relax. (4) Last-minute pickup with same-day return needed. Our 200 THB/kg wash + iron is roughly 250-300 THB total for a single suit + shirt combo, plus 100 THB pickup. Same-day before 2 PM. Compared to hotel pressing (typically 200-400 THB per suit, slow turnaround), our service is competitive with significantly better quality finish. See /suit-cleaning-bangkok for full service details.
