A par is one complete set of linen for every bed in the property. Hold three par and you have one set on the bed, one in the wash, and one on the shelf. That third set is not redundancy for its own sake — it is what absorbs a late collection, a delayed delivery, or an unexpectedly full night, and properties that run at two par discover this the first time something goes wrong.
Three is the working standard for most properties: one in use, one in process, one ready. Four par is common where linen is heavy or slow to dry, where collection is less frequent than daily, or where the property runs near full occupancy year-round and has no slack. Two par is possible only with same-day turnaround and no tolerance for a single missed collection, which in Bangkok traffic is a thin margin to run on.
Directly, and this is the practical lever. Daily collection lets you hold less linen, because the in-process set is only away for a day. Weekly collection means the in-process set is away for a week, and you need enough stock to cover every day of it — effectively pushing you toward four or five par. The trade is capital in linen against frequency of collection, and for most properties buying fewer sets and collecting more often is the cheaper side.
It rarely shows up as a shortage. What happens instead is that housekeeping starts putting damp or barely-dry linen on beds to bridge a gap, which is how a property acquires a musty smell it then blames on the laundry. It also accelerates wear, because the same sets are cycled far more often. The cost lands as guest complaints and shortened linen life rather than an obvious stockout, which is why it goes unnoticed for months.
Count every complete set you own — on beds, in the linen room, in transit — and divide by the number of beds. Do it on a normal day rather than after a big delivery. Most properties that have never counted find they are between two and three par, with the shortfall concentrated in one item, usually duvet covers or the larger sheet size, because those get replaced last when budget is tight.
