Wash-and-fold vs dry-cleaning — which one do I actually need?

Wash-and-fold uses water + biodegradable detergent in a machine, then air or tumble dry, then hand-fold. The same process you'd run at home but at scale. Dry-cleaning uses a chemical solvent (perchloroethylene or hydrocarbon) instead of water — the garments tumble in solvent in a sealed machine, no water touches the fabric. Solvent dissolves oil-based stains and doesn't shrink or shape-distort garments built around structural shaping (suits, gowns, structured wool). Wash-and-fold handles 80–90% of everyday garments. Dry-cleaning is for the small set that genuinely can't survive water.

Not always. The label is the manufacturer's safest recommendation — they assume you might use hot water, harsh detergent, and tumble drying, all of which would damage many fabrics. Modern wet-cleaning at low temperature with neutral pH detergent is safe for: most rayon, viscose, modal, modern polyester suits, unstructured cotton blazers, casual silk shirts (cold wash, no spin), modern wool blends labelled 'wool / nylon' rather than 'pure wool'. We DO need to dry-clean: structured suit jackets with shoulder pads and chest canvas (water collapses the structure), pure wool suits and coats, silk gowns with embellishments, anything with leather trim, vintage fabrics. We wet-clean modern unstructured suits, blazers, and dresses ourselves at 200 THB / kg with garment-specific protocol, and we now run professional in-house solvent dry-cleaning for structured suits, silk, velvet, wedding dresses, evening gowns, and vintage couture — all handled in our own facility, nothing sent out. Per-item dry-cleaning starts from 120 THB; wedding dresses from 2,500 THB; leather goods and designer bags are quoted individually over WhatsApp. Pickup and delivery is a flat 100 THB. We tell you honestly whether an item needs solvent or just careful wet-cleaning, then handle either one ourselves.

Ironing is separate at most Bangkok laundries. Per-kg wash-and-fold (200 THB / kg) does NOT include ironing — it includes hand-folding, which makes everyday casual wear look neat but does not press out wrinkles. If you want ironing, add 30–50 THB per shirt at booking. Alternative: ironing-only service (drop off pre-washed clothes) at 30 THB / shirt without the wash. Most travellers and casual residents skip ironing entirely — modern wrinkle-resistant fabrics fold flat and look fine without it. Skip ironing if you're packing for a trip; the garments wrinkle in the suitcase anyway.

We do not put shoes through the washing machine — that destroys most shoes. We do hand-clean with material-appropriate brushes and cleaners, dry on a controlled rack to prevent shape distortion, and condition leather. Bedroom slippers and flip-flops we don't clean (cheaper to replace). Hermès / Louis Vuitton / Chanel sneakers and other designer leather footwear we clean in-house by our leather specialists — quoted individually over WhatsApp.

Yes — duvets and large bedding go in commercial XL machines. Pricing: queen duvet 350 THB, king duvet 450 THB, pillow 100 THB each, blanket / throw 250 THB. Turnaround 48 hours (drying duvets fully takes time). Backpacker math: 7 days of clothes for one person = 4–5 kg. Send as one wash-and-fold load (200 THB / kg × 4.5 kg = 900 THB + 100 THB pickup = 1000 THB total, 24h turnaround). Don't pay for ironing — backpacker clothes don't need it. Don't separate items into 'dry-clean only' unless you actually have a structured garment in there (most backpackers don't). The 1000 THB beats 7 days of hand-washing in a hostel sink (where humid drying creates mildew within 48h).
