Hidden costs to watch for in Bangkok laundry

Six common ones. (1) Ironing surcharge — quoted base rate excludes ironing; some services add 30-100 THB per shirt without prior disclosure. (2) Specialty fabric upcharge — silk, wool, viscose at 150-200% of base rate. (3) Express premium — same-day pricing 30-100% above standard, sometimes not disclosed at booking. (4) Pickup fee on small orders — 'free pickup' might require minimum 5 kg load. (5) Stain treatment surcharge — some services charge per stain. (6) Currency conversion fee — paying in foreign currency adds 2-5%. We don't apply any of these without explicit prior disclosure; some services do.

Three flags. (1) Service weighs your laundry WET after washing (inflates weight 30-50%). Premium services weigh dry, before processing. (2) Calibrated commercial scale not shown — ask 'show me the weight' and reputable services photograph the bag on the scale. (3) Suspicious weight gain — your 4 kg load mysteriously becomes 6 kg without explanation. To prevent: pre-weigh at home using bathroom scale, ask for photo of bag on scale at the centre. We send weight photos automatically; transparent services do too.

Some Bangkok services tack on 'late payment fees' (50-200 THB) — often the cash-only walk-in shops that demand THB on the spot. We don't: we bill digitally after weighing and cleaning, you pay by Wise, PayPal, Visa / Mastercard, or PromptPay before we deliver, and there's no late fee. Watch for the cash-only surcharge model at smaller walk-in shops.

No — at premium tier, lost-item insurance (up to 1500 THB per item) is included automatically. Some sketchy services try to charge a 50-100 THB 'damage protection fee' as a separate line item. This is a marketing tactic; the protection should be standard. Decline 'damage protection fees' at any service that quotes them as extras. Premium services have insurance built into their pricing structure, not added as a fee.

Legitimate but should be transparent. Heavy bedding (queen duvet, king duvet, blankets, comforters) costs 100-450 THB per item beyond the per-kg rate because they need extra-large machines and longer drying. We charge: queen duvet 350 THB, king duvet 450 THB, pillows 100 THB each. Some services hide this in a 'large item fee' that adds 50-200% to your final bill. Ask before booking: 'is bedding extra and how much per item?'

Usually yes — quoted base rates rarely include ironing. Standard wash-and-fold = wash + dry + fold. Ironing is +30-50 THB per shirt at most premium services. Some hotel concierges add ironing surcharge of 100-200 THB per item silently. To clarify: ask 'is ironing included?' at booking. If no, add: 'how much per shirt for ironing?' This question alone has saved tourists hundreds of THB.

Pickup fees are standard (50-150 THB) and should be transparent. Surprise additions to watch for: (1) 'Express delivery surcharge' added on standard orders. (2) 'Outer-zone delivery fee' on locations that should be in standard area. (3) 'Weekend delivery fee' (some services charge 50% extra on Saturdays/Sundays — we don't). (4) 'Holiday delivery fee' (legitimate during Songkran, illegitimate on regular Buddhist holidays). Confirm pickup and delivery fees separately at booking.
