What to Wear to Muay Thai in Bangkok (and How to Keep It Usable)

核心要点

Turning up is easy. Keeping the kit usable through a humid week is the part that catches visitors out, and gloves are the item that fails first.

The short answer

Muay Thai shorts or any loose athletic shorts, a t-shirt or vest, and bare feet — no shoes on the mat or in the ring. Most Bangkok gyms rent gloves for around 100 THB a session and sell hand wraps for about 200 THB, so a first-time visitor needs to bring almost nothing. Buy your own wraps rather than renting, because they sit against your skin and rented ones are shared. The part nobody mentions is what happens afterwards: at 30-plus degrees and high humidity, sweat-soaked wraps and a damp glove liner left in a closed bag will smell strongly within about two days and can grow mould within four. That is the difference between a kit you use all week and one you abandon. If you are training more than three or four times, buying your own gloves in Bangkok is cheaper than renting and they are made here — but only if you can dry them properly between sessions.

What gyms actually expect

Less than people fear. Bangkok gyms are used to complete beginners and to tourists dropping in for a single session, and nobody will mind that you own nothing. Shorts to the knee are fine; proper Muay Thai shorts are shorter and cut wide for kicking, which becomes worth buying if you go more than a couple of times. Long compression leggings are not standard and can restrict the kick. Remove jewellery. Trim your nails — this is a genuine safety point in clinch work rather than a formality. And bring more water than you think, because a Bangkok gym in the afternoon is frequently unairconditioned by design.

Why gloves are the item that fails

A boxing glove has an absorbent foam and fabric liner that soaks up sweat, sits inside a near-airtight leather or synthetic shell, and has no airflow at all once the glove is closed. Put that in a gym bag in Bangkok and you have created a warm, wet, sealed environment — which is why gloves develop a smell faster here than anywhere with a temperate climate, and why a smell that has properly established in the liner is very difficult to remove. The fix is entirely about drying, not cleaning.

  1. Never leave gloves in the bag. Take them out the moment you get back.
  2. Pull the cuff open and stand them wrist-down so air can reach inside.
  3. Put them in moving air — in front of the air conditioning, not in a closed bathroom.
  4. Wipe the inside with a cloth and a little diluted vinegar once a week; it neutralises the odour-causing bacteria rather than masking them.
  5. Never dry them in direct sun or with a hairdryer, which cracks and shrinks the leather.

Wraps and shorts

Hand wraps are the easy part: they are cotton, they wash like any other cotton item, and you should rinse them the same day rather than at the end of the trip. Do not leave them balled up. Muay Thai shorts are usually satin or a satin blend, which washes easily but should not be tumble-dried hot or ironed at any real temperature — the satin glazes and loses its finish permanently. Cold wash, hang dry, and accept the creasing. If shorts have been through a few sessions in this climate, they need washing after every single one; sweat left in synthetic fabric overnight in Bangkok is the source of the smell that never quite leaves.

If the kit has already gone past rinsing

Wraps and shorts that have been sitting damp for days are a normal wash job and usually recover completely — our wash and fold service is 100 THB per kilogram with a 300 THB minimum, and everything is washed separately from other customers' loads, which for gym kit is worth knowing. Gloves are different and we will be straight about it: leather gloves cannot be put through a wash, and what can be done is a surface clean and interior treatment. Send a photo through WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth the money or whether the glove has gone too far, which after a week sealed in a bag it sometimes has.
